ART COMMISSIONS & CULTURAL BUILDINGS

Cultural & Public Architecture

We love cultural work. Galleries, community spaces, arts venues, the odd public commission: they sit alongside our residential and commercial projects and keep us honest. A public building has to earn its place, because it shapes how people meet, learn and make things. We designed the Brighton Youth Centre and the Happenstance art installation, and we bring the same care to both, balancing ambition with a real feel for the place it sits in. Projects such as the Happenstance Archway have been selected and featured in the national ART UK database, showing the cultural relationships.

SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

ALTER has the depth of experience and creative vision to deliver art commissions, public buildings and cultural spaces that endure. We combine architectural rigour with a genuine love of craft and collaboration, working alongside artists, councils and community groups. Sustainability runs through this work as it does across our wider practice, from low-carbon construction to the adaptive reuse of existing buildings for new cultural life.

This juxtaposition of historic and modern cultivates a sensitive, place-led architecture. If you are planning a cultural, community or public project, talk to our Brighton and Truro studios about bringing it to life.

OCCUPYING SPACE

We strive to produce cultural architecture that responds to and is enriched by its setting. Public and community buildings must work for many people at once, so we design for accessibility, flexibility and longevity — spaces that adapt to changing uses and bring people together. Every cultural project is an opportunity to give something lasting back to its place.
