Captured In Film - Folded Gateway
'Happenstance Archway' In Film
Alter Architects proudly won the prestigious art commission to design and produce a striking sculpture for the south entrance to The Level Park in vibrant Brighton. This ambitious project was the result of a collaborative effort, organised as a joint venture by Zizi developers, Brighton and Hove City Council, and Kings Education. Alter crafted an innovative, original, and site-specific sculpture gateway that not only complements the park's landscape but also thoughtfully reflects the rich history of public space in the area. The design features historical portrait photographs of local residents who have significantly contributed to the park’s legacy, beautifully lasered into the metal, creating a meaningful connection between the artwork and the community it serves.
Recording The Memory Of Nature
Capturing Reflective Moments
We were truly fascinated by the idea of capturing the essence of social and public use of the memory landscape – the precious moments experienced in ‘Level Park’ – and distilling them into a single, meaningful moment that would serve to hold these cherished memories in time. This is precisely how the archway came into existence. The memories associated with the park are thoughtfully embedded into a physical form that stands as a testament to those experiences. The tree line at the southern entrance to the ‘Level Park’ greatly informs the design of this fractured yet intriguing structure. These trees symbolize a moment that is not only beautiful but inherently very temporary, reminding us of the fleeting nature of time.
Playing With Form & Structure
Significant Distilled Form & Structure
We wanted to truly capture this significant moment and distill it into a thoughtful form, expertly cast in robust stainless steel to ensure it can withstand the challenging salt conditions found in Brighton. This design pays homage to the rich history and cherished memory of the park, which stretches back to the 1800s. Our creation features different faces depicted in various parts of the triangles that gracefully curve along the arch, representing portraits of local individuals from both past and present. These are real people who have made an impact here, from the illustrious Prince Regent to the market sellers of the 1920s, as well as cricket players and adventurous balloonists who launched their air balloons from the Level.
