Shaping Space by Gathering Light
Petal House Featured on the AJ
Featured on the AJ building library, show-casing one of Alter’s smallest projects both in scale and budget. Loft conversion architects for period homes Brighton. The project aimed to extend the family home into their roof space to create a new master bedroom for the parents and allow their two children to graduate into the larger first floor bedroom and the smaller bedroom to become a studio workspace for the client. The clients were interested in a contemporary design that elevated their property above the surrounding Victorian worker houses in Hanover, Brighton on the south coast.
Collecting Light & Fostering Living
The innovative design involved an intelligent reconfiguration of the first floor, skillfully allowing for an efficient and aesthetically pleasing staircase that leads into the new loft dormer. This design carefully balanced the need for maximizing space in the loft while minimizing the area taken from the first floor, ensuring functionality and flow. A stunning single material birch plywood string-less staircase emerges as the central focal point of the transition, beautifully connecting the charm of the original house with the contemporary flair of the new loft space, all while floating gracefully over the existing architectural features. The timber-framed, highly insulated loft space is elegantly clad in a single-ply membrane, forming a striking contemporary projection from the roof. Additionally, a unique projecting petal window reveal, crafted in sleek metallic aluminium at the rear, complements a large skylight at the front, which bathes the interior bedroom in natural light, creating a serene and tranquil living space.
